TiMBIM Explorer is most useful when the folder structure, naming logic, and file actions are treated as one workflow rather than separate cleanup tasks done in different tools.

  • Start with a real project folder, not a broad drive root, when you are learning the app.
  • Review whether that folder already has a naming convention assigned or inherited.
  • Use the naming page to clean up conventions before assigning them to more folders.
  • If you want Revit version-aware actions, confirm the relevant Revit versions are installed on the workstation.

Use Explorer for folder navigation, file details, search, rename operations, folder actions, and Revit-aware file opening.

Naming Conventions

Use Naming Conventions when the work is about creating, importing, editing, duplicating, exporting, or deleting naming standards and their code tables.

Explorer Page

The Explorer page combines location browsing, an item list, a details panel, rename tools, and an optional search panel. It is the operational view of the app.

  • Browse pinned folders, local paths, Autodesk Docs, OneDrive, and SharePoint-related roots
  • Open folders directly from the tree or by typing a path
  • See file type, size, modified date, attributes, and Revit details in one place
  • Use context menus for copy, move, delete, pin, unpin, properties, and naming actions

Naming Conventions

The naming page is where conventions are created and maintained. Each convention can include fields, separators, examples, and mapping tables for code-driven naming.

  • Create a convention manually or start from a built-in starter template
  • Maintain field order, field types, examples, and separators in one editor
  • Edit code tables directly and paste two-column Excel data into the code grid
  • Use the right-click list menu for create, import, duplicate, export, and delete actions

Rename Modes

Direct Name

Best for one-off changes when you already know the exact target name.

Find And Replace

Best for broad corrections where a repeated string needs to be changed across multiple items.

Add Prefix / Add Suffix

Useful for staged delivery labels, issue markers, revision markers, or temporary coordination tags.

Advanced Transform

Useful when rename logic needs more structured transformations than a simple text replacement.

Revit File Actions

When the selected file is a supported Revit file, the details panel can show version information, worksharing details, and central-path details where available. The context menu can also offer "Open With Revit" options for installed versions.

  • Use matching-version open when you want the app to choose the detected installed Revit version
  • Use the explicit Revit year options when you want manual control
  • Check the details panel first if you are verifying a file before opening

Frequently Asked Questions

Does search look inside file contents?

No. The current search panel is for file and folder names, file metadata, state, size, dates, and naming-convention fields where a convention is active.

Where are naming rules stored?

TiMBIM Explorer uses a shared naming profile in the TiMBIM AppData area for naming rules, while Explorer-specific UI settings stay in the Explorer settings area.

Can I start from a spreadsheet for code tables?

Yes. In the naming editor, the code table grid accepts pasted two-column Excel data, and you can also add or remove rows directly in the grid.
